Project No.02: Jewelry box

This was my second project, it is a box jewelry box I made my mother for Christmas. It was made from a bloodwood off cut my local hardwood dealer had. Due to my lack of experience, I didn't realize how hard most exotic hardwoods truly are. Cutting and dimensioning the block by hand was very difficult. Once I was happy with the halves, I started hollowing out the interior with chisels. Bloodwood easily splinters, I found this out the hard way.

I would hollow out, then I would get greedy with my chipping, or forget to sever the cross-grain edges, and blow out the wall. Then I would flush the cavity and restart.

For the top, I rounded over the edges and created an a-symetric curve with rasps. I also chiseled out hinge mortises.

Finishing I used some Minwax tung oil finish, sanding when wet on the first couple coats to fill the grain. I did a total of 5 coats, sanding between coats up to 600 grit. Then I coated it with wax, and buffed.
